Technical Support Unit
Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
Supported by USAID – FHI360
Technical support Unit (TSU) – Tamil Nadu & Puducherry has been functional from the year of 2007, with USAID Support and was under the Management of VHS APAC until 2012, with USIAD - PHFI PIPPSE Project form July, 2012 to June 2017 and through USAID – FHI360 from July 2017 onwards.
The Mandate of the TSU is to extend technical assistance in specified areas to the SACS in helping it achieve the NACP goals and objectives. The TSU is a coordinator and not an implementing agency unless specifically requested to. Since prevention is the mainstay of the national strategy to control HIV/AIDS, the TSU is required to focus and bring in technical and professional expertise in the areas of prevention and which include, evidence based strategic planning and resource planning, capacity building and activities related to strengthening Targeted Interventions (TIs).
TSU TN & PY has been dynamic in terms of rolling out various pilots in specific districts and some of them are; a model to reach out to LDT (Long distance Truckers) involving the Road Transport Office (RTO) in many districts; PPTCT services for FSWs and Index Case Network for Tracking and Testing (ICNTT) piloted by TSU TN & PY are other standing examples for scale up and replication. ICNTT facilitates early identification of PLHIV. TSU TN & PY is the pioneer in the country to manage the TI related data of the state in online for the last 7 years.
In the last 10 years, TSU TN &PY has provided evidence based technical support and strategic support to both SACS, which has resulted in overall strengthening of the TI program and service uptake by HRGS, in both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
